The internship will support current Additive Manufacturing (AM) research and technology within the Airbus Central Research and Technology (CR&T) team.

CR&T researches disruptive AM technologies to support ‘generation-after-next’ products in all Airbus business unit divisions – from civil aircraft and helicopters to defence and space applications.  The team also supports the AM technical qualification and industrialization through expertise gained through previous research into the relevant technology.

The internship will be based in the new Airbus Wing Integration Centre state of the art facility.  The placement will involve hands on practical AM experience within the facility alongside theoretical research to support to the AM Tech qualification activities and upstream additive manufacturing technology and applications. Examples of the upstream opportunities are the use of multi material additive manufacturing and exploitation of the design and manufacturing freedom offered by AM to create unique performance meta materials that were previously not possible via conventional manufacturing methods.

Tasks:

During this internship, the activities you may undertake will include;

·  Design for AM – 3D solid modelling part and build design
·  Materials characterization and development – e.g. high performance titanium, aluminium, steel and inconel.
·  AM process characterization, simulation and development,
·  Post processing technologies – inspection, heat treatments and surface improvement
