Internship project

Natural gas is a cheap and available fossil resource mainly composed of methane. In the frame of its R&D program on natural gas, TOTAL aims at benchmarking two olefins-producing processes to be capable of foreseeing any novel processes.

The goal of the internship is thus to compare the key olefins-producing processes: (i) methanol-to-olefins (MTO) and (ii) methanol-to-propylene (MTP). In order to properly compare these processes, a first additional step has to be considered to produce the methanol from methane.

The comparison has to be achieved by first simulate the processes on Aspen Plus® software. Heat and mass balances will be then extracted from the simulations detailing feed, product, and utility streams. Preliminary economics and environmental impact (CO2 emission, energy efficiency …) will be calculated to conclude on the overall performances.
