Realization of Highly Efficient Hybrid III-V/Si Optical Modulator for Innovarive Optical Phase Array Implementation
In order to be able to use high optical power in Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) applications wavelength above 1.4µm are mandatory for eye safety reason. Hence, the use of Silicon Photonics to build integrated chip for LiDAR application is now a hot topic at the international level. Optical Phase Arrays (OPA) are one the most promising solution to implement the beam scanning solutions used in the LiDAR chips. In order to provide high speed and low power scanning, the phase shifters are the most critical devices within the OPA. Preliminary investigation shows that standard solutions (namely PN junction, PiN diodes or thermal phase shifters) must compromise between speed, compacity and optical losses. In parallel, Hybrid III-V/Si Semiconductor Insulator Semiconductor (SIS) optical phase modulators showed at the same time high efficiency, low loss and compacity due to their superior optoelectronic properties. The thesis aims therefore at demonstrating innovative OPA devices taking advantage of such hybrid phase modulator devices.
funded by a STMicroelectronics’s CIFRE contact you will work in collaboration with C2N laboratory (CNRS) and CEA. Your mission will be to design, fabricate and characterize new types of OPA systems based on hybrid MOS modulator structures. You will drive the project over the three-sites of CEA-Grenoble, ST-Crolles and C2N in Palaiseau. A good knowledge of optical devices, a strong interest in process development and good communication skills are mandatory to fulfill this mission.
Profile
Master degree in Optics or Nanoelectronics
-Knowlege of integrated optics
-a past experience (intership or school project) in microelectronics process development or process integration would be a plus.
