Research Staff Member – Future of Computing for Materials Discovery

IBM Research - Almaden is searching for a Research Staff Member to develop new chemistries, workflows, analytics and AI-driven tools to accelerate materials discovery. This research will be carried out in collaboration with experts in AI, natural language processing, high performance computing, quantum computing as well as other experimental scientists as part of IBM's Future of Computing effort to harness emerging computing technologies to accelerate the discovery of new functional materials for diverse applications.

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced individual who is interested in joining our multi-disciplinary research team. The candidate should have a strong foundation of domain expertise in chemistry, polymer, and/or materials science. In particular, the candidate should have significant experience in modern polymerization techniques (free-radical, living free-radical, ring-opening polymerization, anionic…etc.) as well as contemporary polymer analysis and characterization techniques. It is advantageous if the candidate has experience developing polymeric materials for different fields of application (i.e., electronics, healthcare/therapeutics…etc.). The candidate should also have basic competency and familiarity with common programming languages (i.e. Python), data analytics, and machine learning. In addition, it is advantageous if the candidate has experience in script writing/lab automation for data acquisition, data curation, database management systems, front-end development, etc.

This position requires strong and frequent collaboration with experimental chemists and materials/polymer scientists, computational chemists and materials scientists, data scientists, and computer scientists. As such, the candidate should have excellent/outstanding written and oral communication as well as professional presentation skills as evidenced by a strong record of publications and presentations and demonstrated success in team-based projects. The ability to explain difficult concepts to an audience with diverse technical backgrounds is critical. The scientist will be expected to identify key problems, generate novel solutions and reduce them to practice, disseminate the results of such activities to internal colleagues/partners and capture relevant intellectual property via patent applications.

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

• At least 3 years of experience in one or more of the following areas: organic synthesis, polymer synthesis, materials synthesis, polymer/materials characterization
• At least 6 months of programming experience with one or more of: C/C++, Java, JavaScript, and Python
• At least 3 months of experience in one or more of the following areas: machine learning, data analytics/visualization, database management systems, front-end development
• English: Fluent (additional language proficiency is beneficial)

Candidates should have earned a Ph.D. degree in Chemistry, Polymer Science and Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
