Legal Summer Associate Program Intern

Job Description:

At HPE, we bring together the brightest minds to create breakthrough technology solutions and advance the way people live and work. Our legacy inspires us as we forge ahead dedicated to helping our customers make their mark on the world.

Learning does not only happen through training. Relationships are among the most powerful ways for people to learn and grow, and this is part of our HPE culture. In addition to working alongside talented colleagues, you will have many opportunities to learn through coaching and stretch assignment opportunities. You’ll be guided by feedback and support to accelerate your learning and maximize your knowledge. We also have a “reverse mentoring” program which allows us to share our knowledge and strengths across our multi-generation workforce.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (“HPE”) is one of the largest and most innovative technology companies in the world. Consistent with that culture of innovation, the HPE Legal Department is changing the game of how a large corporate legal department (approximately 500 employees in over 30 countries) delivers legal services to its business clients. One part of that “game changing” culture is the 2L Summer Program.

Since 2010, Hewlett-Packard Co. and now HPE have hired attorneys directly out of law school. In 2014, HP started its 2L Summer Program. First year law students with a commitment to diversity and an interest in gaining experience with a legal department at a major technology company and with a leading law firm are encouraged to

apply for this 10-week, paid summer internship offered through the Law in Technology Diversity

Collaborative.

This opportunity will provide an enriching summer experience for diverse 1L law students by providing them an opportunity to gain rare in-house tech company experience and build a network of contacts, while also creating a pipeline for companies and firms to cultivate and advance diverse talent.

Interns will immerse themselves in the inner workings of an in-house legal department and experience first-hand a mix of complex legal, regulatory, and public policy issues faced by tech companies in their respective industry sectors, all while working alongside a talented and lively in-house legal team. The interns will have the opportunity to participate in a rich mix of client projects, training programs, social activities, pro bono assignments, and community service initiatives. There will also be several events over the course of the program for the 2020 class of the Law in Technology Interns to meet, learn and network.

During the 5-week in-house portion of the program, interns will learn about one or more substantive practice areas, tackle meaningful work, and shadow current team members. Upon acceptance of an offer, interns will be asked to rank their preferred legal sub-teams. While each company’s in-house legal department organizes their sub-teams differently, an example of possible rotations available are:

(1) Litigation - Researching pertinent issues and updating presentations on recent litigation.

(2) Intellectual Property - Counseling the business as they develop new products, using case law to apply copyright, trademark, and patent law principles to legal advice; providing support for the patent prosecution team.

(3) Corporate - Assisting with SEC disclosures, employment, and compliance issues.

(4) Government Relations and Public Policy - Addressing how public policies affect these companies’ business models.

(5) Product Counseling - Advising the business in support of product offerings and services, including new launches.

(6) Commercial/Contracts - Assisting with contract review and negotiations.
