The Narrative Designer is responsible for the integration of gameplay in the Narrative structure and scripted events, working within the narrative team and as part of the wider design team.

The main tasks of the Narrative Designer are to:

·  Understand the elements of the Game Direction and gameplay, and consider how it might and should affect the development of Narrative;
·  Collaborate with the Creative and/or Narrative director, to understand and translate the emotional intentions for the player into the game experience, through development of appropriate Narrative systems and features;
·  Provide ongoing support to the Narrative director in the creation of systems & content that supports the Narrative proper (gameplay production, dialogue, scripted events, +);
·  Formalize the implementation of the Narrative systems and features in document form, and be responsible for their final implementation in-game;
·  Participate in the development of specific features and assets for the Narrative & scripted events;
·  Throughout production, propose &/or address directly necessary changes to the Narrative system and scripted events arising from directorship feedback, in order to achieve the desired player experience;
·  Coach the Narrative team in asset production and integration, in support of the Narrative systems and features;
·  Assume the responsibilities of a writer on certain projects or for certain topics;
·  Carry out all other related tasks;

Higher-learning Degree or Diploma in literature or equivalent

Relevant Experience:

·  Minimum 3-5 years’ experience in narrative design, game design, level design, or equivalent;
·  Familiarity with principles of game narrative, specifically in the context of emergent/open world games;
·  Experience with video games a must;
·  Experience in writing, story development, and film-making an asset.

Other Skills:

·  Good knowledge of video games;
·  Knowledge of game design basic rules & theory (learning curve, difficulty curve, curve of rhythm);
·  Strong analytical and structured mind, with a proven capacity for and comfort with abstraction;
·  Listening, communication, and collaboration skills;
·  Creativity;
·  An eye for new trends and innovations within the industry.

The purpose of this essay is to expose your knowledge of game Narratives that cater to player choice within an open world game structure.  More and more, writers must embrace game Narrative as a system designed to allow players to live and create their own stories inside their virtual world.
