Senior Welding Engineer

Charlotte, NC

Position Overview:

Siemens Energy in Charlotte is the North American hub, producing all three main power-producing products used by central station power producers (Generators, Steam Turbines and Gas Turbines) and industrial turboset main components.

Manufacturing is an integral part of the Siemens Energy Charlotte facility. The Steam Turbine Manufacturing Engineering department is seeking a technical, proactive professional to join the team as a Welding Engineer for Steam Turbine manufacturing plant. This position can be hired within two different levels, commensurate with experience as defined in requirements below.

Responsibilities:

Welding Engineer coordinates all related technical welding processes. You will assist welders for any technical issues related to welding and functionally responsible for welder qualification and maintenance of welder certifications.

•Contract review such as check of the technical and expert knowledge of the welders, the production conditions, the fulfillment of the contract terms, the compliance certificate, QM system.

•Check constructions (e.g. determination of the condition of the welded joint, the weld seam geometry and execution, tools and semi-tools as well as welding procedures).

•Sub-contractor (Testing the quality, compliance and fulfillment of working conditions, technical and expert knowledge of welders, operational preconditions, documentation, handbook of quality assurance and QM-system).

•Production planning (e.g. determination of the welder qualification, welding instructions, safety instructions, welding tools, weld inspection).

•Welding devices (determination of proper welding equipment and other accessories, supply of working- and other environmental protection facilities and tools).

•Technical welding production (check of prepared weld geometry, dimensions and cleanness, assignment of valid welding instructions, check of welding inspection for compliance (scope and validity, welding such as introduction of the welders, check of the welding consumables, check of tack welds, parameters such as preheat and processing temperature, weld sequence).

•Inspection (sample test, dimensional test, destructive test, non-destructive test, determination of required corrections and the following inspection, determination of conditions for corrective actions including heat treatment). The responsibility could vary between full or partial and depends on the number of the welding supervisors as well as the determined task sharing within the organization unit.

•Documentation (arrange and archive necessary certificates, instructions, protocols, reports, testing report, etc.).

Required Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience:

•BSWE - Bachelor of Science in Welding Engineering

•Extensive Materials background dealing with HSLA, SS, Cobalt, and Chromoly steels.

•GTAW experience with machine and semi-auto and automatic.

•PAW welding

•State-of-the-art technical knowledge in welding technology

•Ability to read technical documents to determine appropriate welding process

•Destructive testing of welds and non-destructive evaluation methods •Troubleshooting of welding equipment

•To be hired in a level 7 position, you must have a minimum of 5 years of welding experience in a machine shop environment. To be hired in a level 6 position, you must have a minimum of 8 years of experience.

•Work closely with shop floor personnel to troubleshoot issues as they rise

•Experience in implementing and/or improving manufacturing processes, information, facilities, and production planning in a shop environment

Preferred Competencies:

•Narrow Groove welding •Cladding of large components

•R&D experience

•Failure Analysis of welded components

•Experience with all NDE methods used for weld analysis

•Experience in developing cost quotations, ROI analysis, and skills to perform fundamental tasks of business administrations
