Job Description

Under direct, or general supervision, this position will be responsible for providing complex field inspection, surveying, and evaluations to traffic signalized intersections and related equipment in order to verify safety, maintenance, conditions, functions, and quality of the Customers signal systems.

Job duties include:

·  Inspects assigned City infrastructure, systems, and equipment for maintenance needs and recommends appropriate actions; assists in developing work plans, procedures, and schedules.
·  Evaluate and document current conditions of all existing and new traffic signal equipment.
·  Inspects and evaluates work in progress and upon completion to assure that installations, inspections, repairs, maintenance, and project activities are performed in accordance with City standards and specifications.
·  Assists in coordinating, overseeing and personally participating in all assigned programs, including inspecting, installing, maintaining, and repairing activities of Customer traffic signal and control systems to ensure safe and efficient access for the public.
·  Provide technical and specialized assistance to the Field Supervisor.
·  Provides technical support to assigned traffic signal field staff; participates in performing routine to complex and specialized installation, inspection, maintenance, and repair work on assigned Customer traffic signal and street lighting infrastructure and systems.
·  Performs routine to complex electrical work such as repairing signal equipment, programming signal controller equipment, and installing and modifying equipment.
·  Observes safe work methods and makes appropriate use of related safety equipment as required; may participate and assist in coordinating safety training.
·  Maintains accurate records and logs of daily activities, using appropriate computer software applications.
·  Responds to and performs emergency repairs and other emergency services as necessary.
·  Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Knowledge of:

·  Fundamental concepts associated with the inspection of traffic signal systems.
·  Principles, methods, materials, tools, and practices used in the troubleshooting, preventative maintenance, and repair of devices used in traffic signals and street lighting.
·  Components and parts of electronic and electrical devices used in traffic control equipment.
·  Basic design and construction practices and methods of traffic signal and control and street lighting systems, is required.
·  Principles, methods, and practices in the design of traffic signals and signal phasing, is preferred.
·  Applicable Federal, State, and local laws, codes and regulations.
·  Occupational hazards and safety equipment and practices related to the work.
·  Safety equipment and practices related to the work, including safe driving rules and practices.
·  Basic trigonometry, geometry, and algebra as applied to routine engineering computations.
·  Modern office practices, methods, computer equipment and applications related to the work.
·  Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and City staff.

Ability to:

·  Read and interpret engineering plans, technical drawings, specifications, and maps.
·  Apply technical knowledge and follow proper traffic signal operation practices and procedures.
·  Oversee and participate in installation, inspection, maintenance, and related projects in the assigned functional area(s).
·  Plan, schedule, assign, and oversee activities of traffic signal and control installation, inspection, maintenance, and repair personnel.
·  Inspect the work of others and maintain established quality control standards.
·  Train others in proper and safe work procedures.
·  Identify and implement effective course of action to complete assigned work.
·  Safely and effectively use, operate, and maintain equipment and tools required for the work.
·  Use computers and software used in traffic signal controllers.
·  Determine priorities and make independent judgments in emergency situations.
·  Maintain accurate logs, records, and basic written records of work performed.
·  Operate a motor vehicle safely.
·  Follow department policies and procedures related to assigned duties.
·  Give, as well as, understand and follow oral and written instructions.
·  Organize own work, set priorities, and meet critical time deadlines.

Education and Experience:

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

·        Equivalent to Associate of Arts degree in civil engineering, drafting, surveying, or related field and four (4) years of experience in installation, inspection, maintenance, and/or repair of traffic signal and street lighting devices, including one (1) year of lead experience overseeing field crews.

Licenses and Certifications:

·  Possess and maintain a valid International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Level III Traffic Signal Technician Certification.
·  Possess and maintain a valid International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Traffic Signal Inspector Level I (Florida Edition)
·  Possess and maintain a valid Master Electrician License.
·  FDOT MOT Certification
·  Valid Florida State Driver’s License with satisfactory driving record.
