Job description

Description de la mission

PhD Subject Description

·  • Context of the PhD Position: The proposed PhD position falls within the project Guided Wave for Structural Health Monitoring (GW4SHM), which is a part of the call Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Networks (H2020-MSCA-ITN-2019). The aim of this project is to develop and combine efficient technological SHM bricks: simulation, sensing, signal processing and statistics/machine learning tools to assess and prognosis the health of structural systems. The project brings together partners from academia, industry and will train a new generation of researchers skilled in all aspects of SHM, enabling them to transform SHM research into practical applications, with focus on aeronautic, oil & gas and automotive industries. The outcome of the project will pave the way for integrating SHM into real-world engineering structures. The PhD students will acquire multidisciplinary scientific expertise, complementary skills, and experience working in academia and industry.

·  • Problem statement: Aeronautic composite structures are required to be lifecycle managed under the damage tolerant principle, while the airworthiness is maintained through the process of scheduled inspection, and if needed repair or replacement. In that sense, the scheduled inspection of a structural component is addressed by non-destructive inspection (NDI) techniques. However, this current practice can be cost consuming, which is mainly due to the high degree of human interaction, and the fact that the structural components, which are difficult to access have to be disassembled. To reduce the inspection cost, Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) concept has emerged in the aeronautic industry. The basic concept of SHM is to acquire and analyze data from on-board sensors to determine the health of a structure in the sense of: (i) diagnostic (detection, localization, damage size estimation) and (ii) prognostic.
The proposed PhD position will address the challenge of enhancing the Remaining Useful Life (RUL) based on SHM concept, with an application to composite structures subject to damage and its propagation due to operational/environmental conditions. The PhD student will focus on developing prognostic methods for efficient RUL estimation, with emphasis on guided wave sensing, advance signal processing, data mining/fusion and hybrid modeling.
