Plastics / Materials Development Engineer

Your Role:

At MilliporeSigma, the R&D New Product Development team in Burlington, MA is seeking a hands-on Plastics / Materials development engineer to implement appropriate materials for new consumables, hardware, and instrumentation that meet our life science customers’ needs in an environmentally sustainable and responsible way. 

·  Support product specification development for new product designs by researching and presenting material options (plastics, elastomers, metals, ceramics, etc.)
·  Analyze and characterize materials with in-house tools and by working with outside organizations. Examples include Metrology (CMM, optical comparator), Tensile testing, SEM, spectrometry, Rheometry, structural analysis, etc.
·  Characterize materials for manufacturing methods such as injection molding, casting, forming, etc.
·  Design fixtures and procedures to evaluate materials and designs. 
·  Work with R&D team to investigate new materials and surface treatments to advance Life Science applications (i.e. cell and protein research, bioseparation). Create reports and present findings to development teams.
·  Interact with a multi-disciplinary team of scientists, engineers, designers, etc. to solve complex problems and communicate recommendations. 
·  Attend conference and trainings to continually advance knowledge in new materials, treatments, and sustainability. 

 

Who You Are:

 

Minimum Qualifications:

·  Bachelor’s degree in Plastics, Materials or related Engineering discipline and 3+ years of experience in plastics or materials engineering

·  Master’s degree in Plastics, Materials or related Engineering discipline

 

Preferred Qualifications:

·  In depth understanding of various plastic materials, rubbers, metals, etc. as it relates to device design. Understanding of sustainable design principals. 
·  Experience with analytical tools including Digital microscopy, Tensile testing, SEM, Spectrometry, Rheometry, etc.
·  Experience with product design, particularly plastic part design for injection molding.
·  Understanding of manufacturing methods such as injection molding, blow molding, casting, thermoforming, extrusion, etc.
·  Proficient with analytical and design software including Solidworks (or Creo), MS Office, Minitab.
·  Experience creating and evaluating prototypes with various techniques such as machining, 3D printing, molding, casting, thermoforming, etc.
·  Experience with complex problem solving, designing of experiments, analyzing, and presenting findings.
·  Basic understanding of Life Science applications (i.e. cell and protein research, bioseparations). 
·  Demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as in a diverse team environment.
·  Excellent inter-personal and communication skills with the ability to work with scientists, engineers, design, molding, manufacturing, and suppliers.
