The Team

The Cambridge tax team is part of our London Regions Tax business, working closely with colleagues in offices across the region.
We work with dynamic businesses and individuals across the East of England in all sectors but with a particular focus on the high growth life sciences, biotech and technology businesses which are at the heart of the UK government’s Industrial Strategy.

The Role

We are looking for a R&D Tax Assistant Manager to work with the local Corporate Tax personnel to accelerate the growth of our business in this region and work with the highly innovative businesses in the region from tech start ups to pharmaceutical clients. You will be required to use your tax knowledge to help our clients in making claims for R&D Tax relief, as well as Patent Box claims.
This work would include:

• Work with client engagement teams to develop claim methodologies and prepare R&D tax relief claims and Patent Box claims for submission to HMRC
• Manage overall client engagement, including liaison with KPMG and client staff
• Advise client technical specialist on the application of the R&D guidelines to their work
• Build an internal network within the wider tax practice of the firm
• Help to establish and maintain strong client relationships with both existing and new clients
• Work with the KPMG technical specialists to ensure that eligible R&D Tax expenditure and Patent income is correctly identified.
• Assist in progressing business development opportunities and to pitch for work with both new and existing clients.
• Work with the client's technical and tax teams to prepare and submit robust and eligible R&D Tax claims and Patent Box claims.
• Work with the engagement team in responding to HMRC enquiries into R&D Tax claims and Patent Box claims
• Help to establish and maintain strong client relationships with both existing and new clients - Work with the client's finance and tax teams to ensure that eligible R&D Tax expenditure and Patent income is identified.
• Liaising with clients on day to day matters and working with manager and senior managers, on larger clients
• Working alongside the corporate tax team and assisting in the overall tax advisory and planning work as well as the R&D tax claims
• Maintaining strong financial management of client accounts. For example making sure that fees are raised regularly and identifying situations where overruns can be billed

The Individual

• Must have science, technical or accounting/finance degree
• Excellent communication skills in a range of situations with internal team members and senior staff at the client. In particular having an ability to explain complex technical concepts in simple language
• The ability to deal with technical and finance staff on a one to one to basis, conducting structured discussions.
• Capable of producing documentation to a high level of quality for submission to HMRC
• Ability to guide and provide constructive guidance to junior grades to deliver high quality work to the client/HMRC and as part of their career development.
• Very good project management skills and an ability to manage own workload, as well as junior members of the team.
• Excellent problem solving skills
• Strong time and task management skills. Able to remain calm when under pressure and meet deadlines
• Monitors and upholds high quality of service and products to clients (internal and external). A practical approach to problems with client focus and commercial awareness
• Ability to build good relationships with clients
• Communicates with impact in a way that is open, honest, consistent, and clear
• Ability to work as part of a team. Gives clear directions, positive and constructive feedback. Coaches less experienced staff.
• Works in a cooperative, respectful manner with colleagues, clients and the wider community
