Job description

You will interact with the brightest minds in IBM and will help to bring ideas into scalable, robust outcomes. We want to bring out the best in you and expect you to do the same to us. Your proactive approach to creative problem solving will be essential to the success of our team and the company.

You will be focusing on the use of Bayesian Optimisation to intelligently sample high dimensional hyper-parameter spaces to enable the tuning of Machine Learning models in a variety of different contexts. You will be developing new algorithms based upon techniques such as, but not limited to, Gaussian Processes and Probabilistic Back Propagation and implementing these on High Performance Computing systems using POWER architecture. A background in implementing AI methods, such as Gaussian Processes, with Fully Homomorphic Encryption would also be advantageous.

The responsibilities will be:

1) Development of new algorithmic approaches in Machine Learning
2) Implementing new algorithms on High Performance Computing architectures
3) Helping clients to understand and use new developments through the implementation of Proof of Concepts
4) Publication of results in top tier journals and scientific conferences such as NeurIPS, AAAI, ICML etc
5) Contributing new ideas towards the development of new research projects in a cross-laboratory, globally distributed team
6) Liaising with researchers, scientists, business development team and management in other organisations including our clients and collaborators.
7) Communication at the executive on the status of your research.

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

a) A PhD in Mathematics or Computer Science;
b) Research experience working in an industrial research environment
c) Working in the area of artificial intelligence including but not limited to Machine Learning;
d) An in-depth understanding of Bayesian Optimisation, Gaussian Processes and related techniques
e) A strong and demonstrable understanding of the Linux Operating System on High Performance Computing architectures including POWER
f) Experience developing research quality software
h) Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
i) Demonstrable experience of publishing in top tier journals and conferences.
