Tout comme le technicien de maintenance IT, le technicien help desk IT agit auprès d'utilisateurs de matériels informatiques pour les guider dans l'installation de leur poste de travail ou pour gérer une panne, à ceci près qu'il intervient… à distance, depuis une plate-forme téléphonique. Une fois le problème exposé par l'utilisateur, le technicien help desk IT doit d'abord établir un diagnostic, intervenir lui-même en prenant à distance le contrôle de l'ordinateur ou bien faire appel à un autre technicien spécialisé. Il peut aussi préconiser l'envoi d'un technicien sur site. Le technicien help desk IT doit faire preuve de patience et de pédagogie face à des interlocuteurs souvent stressés et ne maîtrisant pas le vocabulaire technique informatique.
