Patch Engineer (Linux Infrastructure)

Job description

The Patch Engineer (Linux Infrastructure) role exists in the UNIX Platform Engineering team within HSBC Operations Services and Technology (HOST) and reports to the IT Delivery Services (IDS) Patch Engineering Team Leader.

The role offers an exciting opportunity to work as part of a team of highly-experienced and qualified OS Engineers located across the globe (Hong Kong, India, Europe and US), tackling a variety of technical challenges that will develop and push you to the limits of your knowledge.

Your responsibilities will include:
· Preparation and delivery of monthly patch bundles for deployment across HSBC's primary Linux global estate
· Working with Cyber Security colleagues to review and assess critical OS vulnerabilities
· Create, maintain and support automated processes for the delivery of patches to the estate
· Knowledge and experience of Red Hat Satellite, Zypper, Yum
· Maintenance and support of the estate-wide audit process used to report on estate compliance
· The automation and streamlining of patch delivery processes as well as the maintenance and support of the current infrastructure
· Create and maintain engineering standards documentation
· Create and maintain operational support documentation
· 3rd line support for issues related to patching of the operating system

Desired profile

Qualifications :

The ideal candidate for this role will have the below experience and qualifications:
·  Proven expertise in Red Hat Linux versions 5, 6 and 7 and good working knowledge SUSE SLES v10 and v11
·  Knowledge and experience of Red Hat Satellite, Zypper, Yum
·  Excellent scripting skills
·  Excellent problem solving skills and experience providing support to a wide customer base
·  A desire to find ways to continually improve the service delivered to customers
·  A track record of constantly looking for ways to do things better and an excellent understanding of the mechanism necessary to successfully implement change
·  Excellent written and spoken communication skills; an ability to communicate with impact, ensuring complex information is articulated in a meaningful way to wide and varied audiences
·  Experience of creating and deploying comprehensive business/operating plans which consistently deliver desired results
·  A comprehensive understanding of risk management and proven experience of ensuring own/others' compliance with relevant regulatory processes
·  In addition to the details listed above, the ideal candidate will have a track record of:
·  Experience of one or more of the following: Puppet, Ansible, HPSA, Chef, GIT, Jira and Confluence
·  Proven programming ability especially using Python or Perl
·  Experience of working in an Engineering team supporting a large, highly regulated estate
·  High quality documentation skills

The base location of this role will be Park Street, London or South Yorkshire Global Data Centre, Sheffield.
