Global Legal plays an important role in protecting the Group’s reputation by helping to future-proof the organisation through robust legal risk and issue advisory. Responsible for providing comprehensive legal advice to senior management and all global businesses and functions, the team offers a diverse range of legal skills, jurisdictional experience and practice specialisms across all countries and territories in which our businesses operate.

We are currently seeking a high calibre professional to join our team as a Legal Counsel.

Principal Responsibilities

·
Provide counsel and legal support on a variety of legal matters relating to the relevant legal areas;

·
To be considered to be a trusted adviser to the business by ensuring that commercially sensitive, pragmatic and practical legal support and advice is provided in a cost-effective manner with respect to the relevant legal areas

Assist the DGC Team to implement strategic legal policies to ensure that the Group’s exposure to global legal risks is managed appropriately with respect to the relevant legal areas.

Provide prompt, commercial, practical legal advice with respect to the relevant legal areas.

·
Be proactive in the provision of legal support and in advising the business promptly of material legal developments and their implications with respect to the relevant legal areas.

·
Ensure line manager and the relevant DGC Team members are fully briefed on major issues arising with respect to the relevant legal areas and major legislative changes in area of expertise.

·
Assists Regional General Counsel ASP to manage legal risk across the Asia Pacific region in accordance with established policies and procedures. The diversity of HSBC’s business, its geographic spread and the constant changes internally and externally means the diversity of matters which the jobholder is required to manage and advise on is very wide.

Deliver fair outcomes for our customers and ensure own conduct maintains the orderly and transparent operation of financial markets.

·
Support achievement of the HSBC vision, Values, goals and culture in personal behaviour, actions and decision making.

·
Understanding of the structure of the HSBC Group and its culture and the ability to handle increasingly complex legal issues.

·
Establish close mutually supportive working relationships with other members of LGA team and the Global Legal Function, including liaising with and coordinating legal advice from lawyers in different locations.

·
Take personal responsibility for understanding and agreeing performance expectations, completing the necessary mandatory training and developing the levels of capability and competence needed to be effective in the role.

·
Contribute to team development, effectiveness and success by sharing knowledge and good practice, working collaboratively with others to create a productive, diverse and supportive working environment.

Qualifications :

Requirements

·  Prioritize workloads in terms of legal risk and commercial consideration;
·  Maintain knowledge of HSBC Group operations and policies;
·  Willingness to acquire knowledge quickly of a diverse range of legal disciplines (ranging from the more general banking laws to the more specific employment/pensions/immigration and competition laws) and to develop an understanding of the structure of the HSBC Group and its culture and the ability;
·  Ability to handle different types of legal work including advisory, investigative, project management, policy drafting and risk stewarding types of work;
·  Adapt work style to meet varied and demanding workloads from diverse legal areas;
·  Keep abreast with the latest legislative and regulatory development with respect to the relevant legal areas;
·  Strong sense of ownership and the ability to handle straightforward tasks with little supervision but know when to seek guidance on more complex or higher risk issues.
·  Holder of law degree in common law jurisdiction with at least 2 years’ PQE;

Good communication and inter-personal skills;

· 
Good analytical and influential skills;

· 
Self-starting with ability to work independently and strong sense of ownership;

· 
Experience in project management/coordination an advantage;

· 
Experience in in-house role and financial sector an advantage;

· 
Chinese language skills (read and write) an advantage.
