Role Purpose

· The Machine Learning Data Scientist will be a driving force in changing the way Finance approach Analytics, Forecasting, and understanding the underlying drivers that impact business performance. With the demand for more forward looking analytics, and the improved compute opportunities offered by the Google Cloud Platform, there is a real potential to transform the way forecasting is carried out by Finance
· They will work closely with the business, the wider Finance and HOST communities, and in particular the Cloud delivery teams to ensure Analytics and Forecasting capabilities are seamlessly integrated to the Cloud reporting migration
· The Data Scientist must have practical experience of delivering machine learning into production in a commercial environment, and ideally modelling experience within risk, trading or financial planning
· The role holder must have a deep understanding of analytical, statistical and coding techniques, along with excellent communication and mentoring skills to help guide the wider Finance community along their Analytics development
· The job holder is also experienced in following a defined Data Science delivery methodology, driven by Exploratory Data Analysis, and the discipline to only embark on projects with suitable data quality and history; must evidence examples of problem framing, data preparation, model building, model deployment, model management, and output consumption
· The Data Scientist must have an excellent understanding of time series forecasting techniques, and knowledge of libraries such as Prophet, R's tsfeatures package and Gluon would be an advantage; experience in building applications with scarce data would be an advantage
· The Data Scientist will be responsible for establishing a common Analytics framework, built from open source algorithms and best practices for classification, clustering, and (most importantly) regression
· The Data Scientist will be responsible for maintaining high standards across the code base (predominantly Python, with some R), repositories and libraries, and model performance; with the soft skills to coach and mentor more junior colleagues to work within those standards
· Experience working with Chatbots or Natural Language Generation would be an advantage

Key Accountabilities

Impact on Business

· Responsible for the Exploratory Data Analysis work to understand the data, business performance and drivers, which will then determine the forecasting approach

· Build and distribute Data Science knowledge across Finance.

· Establish and lead analytical workstreams

· Adhere to the existing Data Science framework for problem framing, data preparation, model building, model deployment, model management, and output consumption; ensuring use of appropriate tools and techniques through the lifecycle

· Draw on a broad experience of the opportunities technology provides in order to design quality solutions to business challenges and deliver benefits.

Customers / Stakeholders

· Influence and collaborate with stakeholders, to build consensus and shape change outcomes.

· Establish and lead working groups to enable the delivery of Analytical tools and techniques

· Inform and advise the relevant governance committees and facilitate senior Finance executive decision making
· Build and manage key relationships with internal and external senior stakeholders
· Understand stakeholders' objectives, direction, priorities and challenges, managing and addressing concerns and objections

· Foster open communication which anticipates stakeholder expectations.

· Champion and embed outstanding service and customer advocacy

· Facilitate interaction with HOST development team to ensure software, repositories and tools are understood and implemented correctly

· Work across other key stakeholders including Risk, Finance, Business and GFOC functions at Group and Regional Level, and Global Finance Change

Major Challenges

· Current Data Science Knowledge – the role requires expertise in various areas (statistics, Python coding, forecasting models and methodologies), which are limited in the existing Finance capabilities. The role holder will need to demonstrate role model skills, with the ability to coach and mentor others

· Data availability and quality – the most dependable data source for Group level forecasting contains around 6 years of monthly data, which has also been subject to a number of partial restatements and adjustments, meaning that the majority of forecasting applications will be closer to statistical models, rather than deep learning. However, richer datasets can be found in particular sites / business areas, so these all need to come together in a coherent, consistent framework

Observation of Internal Controls

· Maintains HSBC internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points, together with any issues raised by external regulators

· Observe and promote the use of the Group's preferred programme management methods/tools.

· The jobholder will implement the Group compliance policy by containing compliance risk in liaison with Global Head of Compliance, Global Compliance Officer, Area Compliance Officer or Local Compliance Officer. The term ‘compliance' embraces all relevant financial services laws, rules and codes with which the business has to comply

· This will be achieved by adhering to all relevant processes/procedures and by liaising with Compliance department about new business initiatives at the earliest opportunity. Also and when applicable, by ensuring adequate resources are in place and training is provided, fostering a compliance culture and optimising relations with regulators

Desired profile



Qualifications :

Knowledge & Experience / Qualifications

· Excellent understanding of applied data science including regression, classification and clustering problems.

· Excellent knowledge of the core machine learning algorithms from classical to deep learning.

· Experience of exploratory data science, telling stories with data and statistical significance testing.

· Practical experience of putting Machine Learning live in a commercial environment.

· Financial modelling experience gained within risk, trading or financial planning.

· Excellent programming experience with the Python data science stack i.e. Pandas, Scikit-Learn and Jupyter

· Experience of Cloud hosting, ideally GCP.

· Excellent organisational, communication, written and interpersonal skills

· Excellent analytical skills and a pro-active approach to problem solving

· Good understanding of financial principles
