Global Markets – Sales Analytics, Data Scientist

The Global Markets Sales Analytics team is responsible using advanced analytics to support Global Markets Sales.

We are looking for a Data Scientist to join the team to work in partnership with Sales and IT colleagues to help originate new business, surface new opportunities, deepen existing client relationships and make sales teams more efficient. You will have a deep knowledge of data science techniques and experience of working with large, complex data-sets. An understanding of Global Markets products would be helpful (especially foreign exchange instruments and interest rate derivatives).

Key responsibilities of this role include:

 The candidate will bring the ability to work with large, complex data sets. The ability to merge large data sets, to generate results and learnings from those data sets and to be able to visualise those learnings and engagingly present to both technical and non-technical audiences and users

 The candidate must be able and willing to use advanced computing in order to achieve real practicable results. The candidate must be able to handle areas of uncertainty. The candidate must have a demonstrable interest and capability in computer sciences and new technology

 The candidate should be able to communicate well across all levels of the Sales & IT organisation. They should be able to work both independently and as a part of a team. The candidate will be empowered to explore hypothesis and to scale experimental work across the business

 The candidate should enjoy problem solving and work with both resilience and creativity at a high pace in a demanding environment


Knowledge, Experience & Qualifications



To be successful in this role you will need to have:

 Previous experience as a data scientist or quantitative analyst

 A combination of applied mathematics, probability and statistics, artificial intelligence (particularly machine learning), natural language processing, visualisation (d3.js, Bokeh, Seaborn, ggplot, etc.), and data engineering/wrangling skills

 Very strong experience of working with data using Python including its Machine Learning libraries [ e.g. scikit learn] and writing in Jupyter notebooks

 Strong SQL skills

 Ability to leverage from, and contribute to, the broader data science/quant community within HSBC Global Markets and beyond

 Proactivity in working with other teams to obtain and understand datasets owned by other teams

 A structured and analytical approach and demonstrable, inquisitive nature

 Skills to communicate and present fluently to audiences at differing ability levels on fields outside of their own specific technical skills

 Ability to work at pace, with resilience, individually or as part of a team

 Motivation to proactively learn new technical skills, technologies and techniques in order to maximise value creation for the business

 A keen focus on delivery and business value

 High quality further education, preferably to Ph.D. level in Physics, Computer Science, or Applied Mathematics.

Ideally the candidate will also possess the following:

 Experience with ElasticSearch

 Knowledge of Software Development Lifecycle and team collaboration software such as Confluence, Jira, etc

 Experience of developing web APIs (preferably Flask) and database development (RDBMS, MongoDB, PostgreSQL, Cassandra, HBase, or Neo4j) is desirable

 Experience of working with data visualisation software such as Tableau

 Expertise in Strong programming background in compiled or scripting languages (C/C++, Python, SQL, Java, etc.)

 Understand data transmission methods and transfer formats like XML or JSON

 Understanding of tools including Relational and NoSQL databases, Big Data architectures a strong plus

 Platform experience of UNIX / Linux style OS

 Previous experience working with HBase, hdfs, Spark, Pyspark, Spark SQL, MapReduce, TEZ

 Previous experience of data profiling
