Role Summary/Purpose

As a Research Engineer in the Mechanical Organization, you will be responsible for developing and validating novel design concepts for next generation wind turbines, Gas Turbines and aircraft engines. You will work with the engineering team to design and test mechanical components, gear train, rotor-bearing systems and drive the execution of a wide variety of mechanical hardware with applications in power generation, ground and air transportation and medical imaging.
Essential Responsibilities

Essential responsibilities include design and assessment of dynamic response of large scale, non-linear turbo machinery structures. Applications include fossil and renewable power generation and storage, gas compression and gas/liquid pumping, electric machines and drives, and propulsion systems for land and air transport.

Specifically, in this role you will:
• Model and understand the vibratory response of wind turbine power train system and components such as gears, bearing, shaft etc. Validate the models with experimental data Develop the physics-based tools to predict the dynamic response for power train dynamics for power generating equipment
 • Execute on critical technologies to enable high performance rotating machines working with internal and business engineering teams as well as outside vendors and research institutes
• Optimize the structure design to improve the durability and reduce weight/cost of the components and system.
• Possess technical expertise with ability to respond to short term technical issues
• Attend customer meetings and provide design results as needed to communicate with the customer on project status
• Understand and follow external developments in rotating machinery technology and rotating components
• Perform all work in accordance with EHS guidelines

Qualifications/Requirements

• PhD or MS with a minimum of 5 years of industrial experience in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Applied Mechanics in rotating machinery and/or rotating components design
• Extensive experience with component and system dynamics design and assessment using state of art tools such as SIMPACK, ADAMS, Simulink etc
• Experience with the design and analysis mechanical components such as bearings, gearbox, pitch & yaw system of wind turbine.
• Deep analytical capability in assessing the Transmission error excitation & its mitigation methods
• Experience with structural design, lifing & durability assessment
• High efficiency in using 3D solid modeling software (i.e. Unigraphics, Solidworks, ProE)
• High efficiency in the use of ADRE and LMS data acquisition and reduction
• High efficiency in ANSYS, SIMPACK, ADAMS, Labview and Matlab.

Desired Characteristics

• Experience in rotating machine design in the power generation, propulsion and/or oil and gas sectors
• Experience in aeromechanics and damping techniques
• Extensive testing of rotating component, data acquisition, data reduction and design validation
• Ability to work across all functions/levels as part of a team
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
