Role Summary/Purpose

As a Research Scientist- Materials Physics and Processes, you will conduct research on advanced composite materials including Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs) and Polymer Matrix Composites (PMCs). The focus of this position will be on experimental design and execution to inform on process-microstructure-property relationships.
Essential Responsibilities

You will: 

·  Conduct fundamental research on process-microstructure relationships 
·  Characterize and quantify material evolution during processing of composite materials 
·  Collaborate with modelers and process scientists to identify and quantify key constituent behavior required for multi-physics process model development 

·  Invent and patent when appropriate  
·  Deliver effective presentations, reports, publications to GE Global Research, GE businesses, government agencies, and professional societies when appropriate
Qualifications/Requirements

·  Ph.D. in Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field or MS Degree in Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field with at least 4 years of experience
·  Experience as an innovative experimentalist with a broad range of experience in experimental design, techniques, and execution 
·  Working knowledge of characterization tools such as mechanical test frames, spectroscopy, optical and scanning electron microscopes, X-ray diffraction, and RGA 
·  Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required. We will not sponsor individuals for employment visas, now or in the future, for this job opening. 

·  Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY.

Desired Characteristics

·  Experience with CMC and/or PMC processing 

·  Understanding of microstructure-property-process relationships for fiber reinforced composites 
·  Experience with the development of characterization and test methods for composites 
·  Experience with materials modeling 
·  Experience with multi-physics modeling packages such as Comsol  
·  Experience with statistical analysis, data analytics, and statistical process control 
·  Experience in a manufacturing setting 

·  Experienced user of characterization tools such as mechanical test frames, spectroscopy, optical and scanning electron microscopes, X-ray diffraction, and RGA 
·  Demonstrated ability to adapt to multidisciplinary teams in a fast-paced dynamic working environment  
·  Demonstrated ability to solve complex technical problems 
·   Excellent oral and written communication skills
