Role Summary/Purpose

As a Rotating Machinery Research Engineer in the Mechanical Organization, you will work with the engineering team to design and test mechanical components, rotor-bearing systems and drive the execution of a wide variety of mechanical hardware with applications in power generation, ground and air transportation and medical imaging.
Essential Responsibilities

Essential responsibilities include the design, analysis, testing and validation of rotating components (bearings, gears, couplings and rotors), analysis of machine dynamics and rotating structures, and the integration of rotating components into prototype electrical and turbomachinery. Applications include fossil and renewable power generation and storage, gas compression and gas/liquid pumping, electric machines and drives, and propulsion systems for land and air transport
Qualifications/Requirements

• PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Applied Mechanics in rotating machinery and/or rotating components design OR MS degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Applied Mechanics in rotating machinery and/or rotating components design and a minimum of 5 years of industrial experience 
• Extensive experience with component testing and operating rigs to acquire performance, vibration, thermal, lubrication, fluid flow and acoustic data.  
• Experience with the design, analysis and testing of rolling element bearing including computational tools and design standards used in the design of rolling element bearings and other rotating components. 
• Design expertise in rotordynamics and rotating components such as bearings, squeeze film dampers and gears including conceptual design, detailed design, testing, validation and product implementation. 
• Deep analytical capability in assessing the stress, lubrication and performance prediction of rolling element bearings and other rotating components. 
• Experience with product design constraints, manufacturing techniques and material processing selections in turbomachinery and electrical machines. 
• Experience in conceptual design, build up and validation of full scale rotating machinery incorporating new or experimental technology. 
• Experience in conceiving, developing and carrying out experiments in rotating component hardware and transferring component level tests into full scale hardware solutions.
• Interpersonal, leadership and communication skills in a global team environment. 
• Execution mindset and sense of urgency. 
• High efficiency in using 3D solid modeling software (i.e. Unigraphics, Solidworks, ProE). 
• High efficiency in the use of ADRE and LMS data acquisition and reduction  
• High efficiency in ANSYS, Labview and Matlab. 
• Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines. 
• Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required. We will not sponsor individuals at the Masters level for employment visas, now or in the future, for this job opening.

• Gearbox design experience.

• Extensive testing of rotating component, data acquisition, data reduction and design validation 
• System modeling - Coupling of fluid, thermal & structural analyses. 
• Experience with materials and manufacturing techniques used in rotating components including alloys and coatings as well as grinding, finishing and hardening methods.
• Experience in rotating machine design in the power generation, propulsion and/or oil and gas sectors
