Role Summary/Purpose

Interns will play an important role in GE’s Edinburgh Grid Solutions Delivery, Design and Support teams for Wide Area Monitoring System (WAMS) Grid Technology. Located in central Edinburgh, our GE Software Solutions team develops, deploys and maintains a suite of world leading WAMS software products.
Essential Responsibilities

WAMS is an advanced technology that uses high-speed synchrophasor data streams from substations spanning a country’s electrical grid. The software you will work with presents the grid operators with real-time advanced analytical views of the grid stability and performance, as well as alerting them to potential issues.

Interns will be introduced to the Energy and Power domains and the software stacks used for WAMS. This includes working with the dominant emerging hyper-scale technologies like kubernetes and Apache kafka, as WAMS applications process huge amounts of data in real time (e.g. over 2 million points per second in a large-scale country-wide WAMS).

The role is based within a small team, which means you will be exposed to a diverse range of information technology, problem solving, and software coding activities. We believe in actively supporting your growth and development while throwing you challenges that will give you the crucial spark of experience to help your future career.

Essential Responsibilities
Interns will be able to use their problem solving, software coding and information technology skills to contribute to WAMS projects across the globe. Interns are encouraged to bring new ideas, develop new tools and implement automation methods, working closely with the team on solving real issues and improving the customer experience.

Interns have contact with stakeholders, customers and colleagues in their day-to-day job which helps them hone good interpersonal skills to become adaptable and proficient as they work with the teams.
All Interns from each department take part in a collective intern-team project over the course of their year of employment. This is a self-contained project aimed at improving key workplace skill sets. It builds teamwork, communication, and time management skills. You will be able to learn and practice these skills within the supportive GE work place, while working on a real-world project which will benefit the company with new tools/applications/methodologies delivered.
