Job description

JOB DESCRIPTION:
The incumbent will join the Life Sciences circular team organization, and lead efforts supporting the transition of the manufacturing operations towards manufacturing 4.0. The responsibilities of the job are summarized below:
- Lead 2-4 projects aiming to improve the understanding and control of key manufacturing processes, through the development and implementation of measurement systems.
o The incumbent will work with the team to define the problems and needs and brainstorm possible solutions.
o Based on the outcome of the brainstorming sessions, the incumbent will identify relevant measurement systems, and conduct proof-of-concept experiments in the lab to validate the approach.
o After successful proof-of-concept tests in the lab, the incumbent will implement the measurement system on manufacturing lines (including proper data collection) working closely with process experts, and when relevant, with the support of external integrators.
o Following the implementation phase, data analytics efforts will aim to answer the problems and needs, and support the identification of follow-on efforts.
- Identify and, when relevant, partner with internal competencies and/or external organizations (universities, integrators) to advance projects and develop competencies.
- Summarize project approaches and results in concise and accurate technical memos.
- Communicate project strategies and results to stakeholders and management through formal presentations.
The incumbent will be part of the Life Sciences Manufacturing Technology & Innovation group (MT&I) while working closely with the corporate R&D group specialized in smart manufacturing.
Requirements:
- Must have expertise and 1+ year of hands-on experience with sensors, data acquisition systems, and basic data processing.
- Must have experience with the integration of sensors in an industrial environment (manufacturing line, quality control).
- Must have experience with mechanical systems design and familiarity with machining and rapid prototyping techniques.
- Ability to proactively interact with stakeholders to understand and precisely define their measurement needs, and rapidly respond with lab scale demonstrations.
- Ability to efficiently communicate orally and electronically with people having a wide variety of backgrounds.
- Demonstrated ability to write concise and accurate technical documents and give strong technical presentations to a wide variety of audiences.
- Basic understanding of smart manufacturing principles is necessary.
- Familiarity with PLC logic, and one SCADA environment is a plus.
- Basic knowledge of process control is a plus.
- Travel requirements: up to 30% of travel to manufacturing facilities within the US.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE POSITION:
- PhD or Master’s degree in mechanical engineering, electronics, electrical engineering, physics, with 1+ year of industrial experience in using and integrating sensors, performing data acquisition and data processing.
- Self-driven and able to find solutions through collaboration with relevant departments.
- Experience with CAD software such as SolidWorks is necessary.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills are necessary to communicate with all levels of management, customers, colleagues, and external partners.
- Experience with LabVIEW is necessary.
- Experience with MATLAB, Python or R is a plus.
- Experience with DIY electronics (e.g., Raspberry Pi, Arduino) is a plus.
