Mid Java Developer

Position Description
CGI is seeking an enthusiastic, experienced full-stack developer to join a web application development group and serve as a technical leader and developer. Our group works across numerous projects and technologies, offering continuous exposure to emerging tools, frameworks, and industry trends. The ideal candidate will be a confident developer with strong Java, Spring, and JavaScript skills and proven understanding of full-stack software development including database design, service layers, application security, and front-end development. Additionally the candidate should have a strong working knowledge of RESTful service development, scalable cloud architectures, and Agile lifecycle development.
We develop and support over 60 applications for large government clients as well as support their infrastructure and operations and are continuously evaluating and integrating technologies such as Elasticsearch, Kubernetes, Splunk, Angular, Vue.js, Knockout.js, Azure and AWS cloud technologies among others. We are looking for a candidate who can help broaden the group’s knowledge and experience by contributing to research efforts and sharing and presenting their knowledge with other developers.
This position requires complex problem-solving including the ability to build and maintain an application for optimal performance. The candidate selected for this position will have the opportunity to grow their technical and leadership skills while working with a positive, energetic, team. The ideal candidate will also be interested in exposure and collaboration with other development teams within CGI to participate in architecture reviews, peer-solutioning, proposal support, knowledge sharing events, etc.
Candidates will be asked to help architect and develop new web applications, work directly with clients and end-users to understand functional needs, and mentor and support team members to foster timely, best-practice development.

Your future duties and responsibilities
The candidate will be responsible for helping to define and code the ongoing architecture and development of both existing and new applications – primarily using Java/Spring/JavaScript technologies. The candidate will be able to confidently code and organize the application using best-practices while helping to share their knowledge with the team and grow the teams’ skills and understanding of robust, secure web applications.
The candidate’s responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

- Authoring and code-reviewing web application code Java, JavaScript, Spring framework, and other emerging languages and frameworks.
- Participating in daily team discussions and code collaboration to promote continuous progress
- Architecting and designing new system features, and providing accurate estimates and development timelines.
- Participating in client, industry, and end-user discussions to help provide technical viewpoint on the application.
- Providing technical guidance to junior developers and business analysts on the team
- Continuous improvement of existing development tools and technologies
- Defining and maintaining standard developent practices for the team
- Integrating automated testing strategies into development practices.
- Augmenting and Improving system architecture
- General understand of database design and optimizing application access to backend data.
- Participating in proof-of-concepts, hackcathons, and cross-project solutioning.
- Continuous direct interaction with clients and end-users to understand software needs and talk through architectural and technical design choices.

Required qualifications to be successful in this role
At least 3 years’ experience in web application development.
- Demonstrated experience with Java and Spring development.
- Familiarity with common technologies within the software development industry and their use
- Experience working with modern Java software development and build tools such as Maven, Git, Tomcat, Eclipse, Bamboo, Jenkins, etc.
- Working understanding of RESTful web service development.
- Confident communication skills with both internal team members as well as customers. Able to effectively collaborate with third parties to jointly contribute to the project’s success.
- Ability to quickly research, learn, and apply emerging technologies within the software development industry.
- An understanding of cloud-native architecture and cloud technologies, especially within Azure and AWS spaces.
- Ability to work independently as well as within a dynamic team environment.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or other technical discipline.
- Ability to mentor and support junior team members while continuing to contribute and complete work

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 5+ years of web application development
- Agile/Scrum certifications and training
- Experience using Atlassian tools, e.g. JIRA, Confluence, BitBucket, SourceTree, etc.
- Azure or AWS experience
- Government Consulting experience
- Experience leading and/or managing similar software development teams
- Experience with serverless technologies
- Understanding with container technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes
