Wheat Breeding Agronomist (2000997) Location:  Saskatchewan

 

Where the Chemistry Happens

 

The North American Spring Wheat Breeding program is aiming to develop commercial wheat hybrids for western Canada and requires the services of a research agronomist to be responsible for overseeing both inbred and hybrid field trials and working closely with BASFs North American Spring Wheat Breeding team and external trial providers in the public and private sectors.

 

We are seeking a professional like you to join our team.  In this role, your responsibilities would include:

·  assisting with early generation material creation, seed preparation, site selection and establishment of research trials spanning yield testing of inbreds and hybrids, disease screening of experimental wheat material and production of hybrid seed. 
·  Management and maintenance of trials, collection of field data, harvest and processing for quality assessment of laboratory testing are also important responsibilities of the position. 
·  Travel to assist with breeding program activities at other trial locations in Saskatchewan, Alberta, and Manitoba may be required at various times throughout the year. 
·  The position forms an important part of the growing activities of the Spring Wheat Breeding Program in Canada and in North America more broadly.

Qualifications

The following skills would be considered as an asset for this role;

 

·  Bachelor’s degree
·  At least 5 -8 years relevant work experience; preferably in a crop breeding program
·  Knowledge of, and experience in, a wheat breeding program
·  Experience in all aspects of field trial preparations, site selection, seed preparation, experimental design, trial maintenance, data collection, harvest and seed processing
·  Good self-organization and planning skills
·  Proficiency with computers, ability to problem solve, flexible
·  Understand the principals of design of yield trials and disease nurseries
·  Ability to work effectively with grain growers hosting trials and external service providers for yield trials, disease nurseries and quality testing.
·  Ability to operate tractors, combines and other machinery used in small plot crop testing programs.
·  Ability to collect data in electronic form and ensure it is transferred to the program database
·  Willing to travel to trial locations outside of Saskatchewan to assist the Canadian Wheat Breeding team  to assist with all aspects of field trial operations.
·  Motivation to develop and maintain internal and external relationships
·  Compliance with Safety, Stewardship and Regulatory programs
