Post-Harvest Research Associate (1904379) – West Sacramento, CA 

Where the Chemistry Happens…

We are seeking a professional like you to determine and/or evaluate output trait characteristics of BASF's Vegetable Seeds products during different phases of development, from ideation (concept development) to commercialization (proper positioning) within the appropriate channel(s) of the value chain. This role shall be consulted on methodologies to be used in all product development cases where internal or external gathering of output trait related data is concerned. 

Note: The work location for this role is currently West Sacramento, CA but will move to our Davis, CA location in July 2020.   Relocation assistance is not available for this role.

Formula for Success: You Will…


· 
Leverage your master’s degree or higher in Horticulture or other relevant Agricultural science discipline; combined with five years or more of post-harvest research experience you will manage and support experimental design and testing, conduct in depth analysis, develop baselines, establish quality metrics, measure performance, and identify key attributes to further post-harvest objectives.      

· 
Your working knowledge of product development within produce-related businesses, postharvest biology, sensory science and/or consumer research will be essential and highly desirable.

· 
Provide recommendations based on research outcomes regarding output traits or product concepts which can be a potential target for tool and/or line development for QCNA and Pre-Breeding. Research outcomes may also be obtained through consumer research conducted by Consumer Insights and/or through collaboration with Consumer Insights.

·  Identify trait attributes associated with sensorial quality of existing commercial hybrids which will determine target for tool and/or line development for QCNA and Pre-Breeding and to validate these attributes in the developed lines. Research outcomes can be obtained through collaboration with Consumer Insights.
·  Identify unique output trait attributes in the newly developed breeding lines or existing commercial hybrids associated with certain metabolic profile as selection target, which can be used in the product positioning. This work can be done in collaboration with Breeding / PD / CCC / other M&S personnel.
·  Develop and validate protocols for measuring certain output trait as defined by the scope of an approved project. These protocols are aimed for measuring the trait performance (e.g. lettuce shelf-life, onion tearless), and not aimed for measuring metabolites responsible for the trait of interest.
·  Interpret / translate results / findings and provide recommendation(s) to project team members based on the outcome of a project.
·  Manage assigned projects in collaboration with internal resources and/or third-party vendor(s) within the approved budgetary amount.
·  Identify network of third-party vendors worldwide to support the development and completion of assigned projects, which may include requirements to mirror the value chain’s current processing or measurement methodology.
·  Provide recommendation to GPDSs, CRMKS, and CCC on the specific capabilities of third-party vendor(s) and where is best to perform the tasks needed by the afore-mentioned groups.
·  Interact with key customers to gain insights into their needs and to obtain feedback regarding output trait quality of BASF Vegetable Seeds products. This task is executed in coordination with PD / CCC / other groups within M&S. Information which requires attention / response from R&D should be discussed with the corresponding R&D Crop Team.
