Job description

Aviva Ireland is recruiting for a Site Reliability Engineer to work on improving our ability to serve our customers through the website and core administrative systems. We need someone to address some existing technical matters, enhance the way we monitor and detect issues and assist the Development & Operations team in designing applications with fault tolerance in mind.

This is a very technical role where someone with the ability to apply solid design principles to an availability or performance problem, regardless of technology stack, will thrive. Aviva Ireland's IT systems comprise of a combination of legacy systems and microservices, but we are moving towards more distributed systems development and so the nature of the problems, outages and dependencies are becoming more complex.

It's a great role for someone who is both technically-minded and enjoys building relationships with lots of different teams.

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Identify failure points in our systems and design solutions to address these.
  • Collaborate with Application and Operations teams to help scale applications.
  • Solve problems relating to performance or loss of service issues and help create solutions to prevent these incidents.
  • Work with Developers to ensure solutions consider performance, high availability and fault tolerance as a functional requirement.
  • Assist with defining Service Level Objectives (SLOs) and how these objectives can be measured.

Skills and Experience:

  • Experience in working with and a solid understanding of Java. Python or .NET coding experience would also be helpful.
  • Proficient in Linux, AIX and Windows.
  • Experience in handling and solving system outages.
  • Confident working with systems on a large scale or that need to scale.
  • Good understanding of network protocols mainly TCP/IP, DNS, HTTP, TLS and SSH.
  • Good working knowledge of Load Balancers, centralized logging and application monitoring tools and message queueing technology.
  • Solid knowledge of JavaEE application servers such as WebSphere, Weblogic and Tomcat.
  • Comfortable running applications in AWS.
  • Excellent relationship management and teamworking skills.
  • Strong organisation and prioritisation capabilities.
