Job description



This new role is ultimately responsible for building and leading the Risk and Control functions for Personal Insurance and Data Science at Aviva Canada.  This role is accountable for the leadership and direction of all Risk and Control activities across Personal Insurance Pricing, Underwriting, Underwriting Enablement, Underwriting Operations, Customer & Propositions and Data Science.

This individual will collaborate closely with senior Personal Insurance leadership to deliver a strong Risk & Control framework for our $3.6B Personal Insurance business with an objective of continuous improvement. 

Additionally, this individual will work closely with the various Business leaders, and Risk teams across the organization to collaborate and ensure that risk is managed effectively, sharing knowledge and best practices across functional areas.

Accountabilities:

·  Leads the development and implementation of risk management processes and procedures within the Personal Insurance & Data Science teams to ensure that the ORCM and risk management framework is adopted and maintained in a pragmatic and consistent fashion.
·  Is actively  engaged with Second Line Risk and Governance teams, Internal Audit and Business Leadership across business units (both globally and in Canada) to identify and implement Best Practices and Standards into Personal Insurance and Data Science in Canada.
·  Collaborates closely with Head Office Underwriting to ensure that there is an appropriate structure for and alignment of Underwriting Strategies and Appetite across Personal Lines, which is aligned with Aviva’s Global Standards.
·  Collaborates with colleagues through the Pricing or Product implementation and development processes to determine areas for improvement upon current processes and frameworks achieving an appropriate balance within the control environment.
·  Oversees a team and areas of responsibility under their control including leading the team in risk reviews, assessing inherent and residual risks, building control frameworks and any control remediation required.
·  Ensures that the Personal Insurance team has a holistic view of its control environment and will partner with key stakeholders to create and implement remediation plans where needed.
·  Champions a strong and continuously improving Risk & Control environment across the Personal Insurance and Data Science teams.
·  This individual will lead a newly assembled team drawing together individuals from various backgrounds.  The R&C AVP will provide leadership, coaching and mentoring to the team including structuring roles and responsibilities to align with the different areas of the business.
·  Ensures that risk reporting meets the requirements of the Executive Committee, the Enterprise Risk Management Committee, and The Personal Insurance Committee, among others.
·  Maintains knowledge of industry trends, developments, and regulatory changes to support the business as required.

Qualifications:

·  A graduate degree (e.g. MBA) and / or FCIP will be considered an asset.
·  10 or more years of experience in the Property/Casualty insurance industry with progressively professional experience preferably including the area of risk management. 
·  Preference will be given to candidates with sound knowledge in the areas of Underwriting, Pricing, Product Development, Insurance Regulations and Data Science.
·  Prior auditing experience or experience in designing or assessing the effectiveness of processes, systems and controls with the ability to identify key business risks.
·  Knowledge of other functional areas (i.e. Claims, Finance, etc.) is an asset.
·  Exceptional communication skills at all levels of interaction and correspondence, including presentation skills.
·  Ability to foster and build good working relationships with business areas inside and outside the business unit.
·  Ability and desire to influence change in a complex and environment.
·  Demonstrated proficiency at managing multiple and changing priorities & projects, and delivering results.
·  Demonstrated ability to lead, manage and motivate a team.
·  Proficiency and resourcefulness in identifying and analyzing relevant data and information and defining critical issues and alternatives.
·  Demonstrated commitment to high standards of performance.
·  Strong analytical and decision-making skills.
·  Commitment to ongoing professional and technical development.
·  Post-secondary education or equivalent combination of education and experience. (Business, Economics, Finance or related discipline).
