DESCRIPTION

This is an exciting opportunity provide the foundational cloud storage service to U.S. Intelligence Community agencies and their missions.

Owning storage infrastructure for the cloud requires continuous innovation and solid delivery. The Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) provides a simple web services interface that can be used to store and retrieve any amount of data, at any time, from anywhere on the web. To make this happen, Amazon S3 needs to build teams with the passion to handle the toughest problems in distributed system.

We’re looking for a Systems Engineering Manager to spearhead a growing area of the S3 Engineering group of Amazon in Herndon, VA. As a leader directing this area, you will focus on the challenges of complex systems design and development, while supporting our most important customers at the largest scale. You will dig into the details of high-level systems challenges one week. You will define, plan and execute on deliverables that break ground in enabling new Systems Engineering operations and best practices the next. You will partner directly with the other teams across S3 to improve on automated code deployment through high security systems.

The ideal candidate is:
A technical leader. As a Systems Engineering Manager, you will provide exceptional leadership and management for a staff of local Systems Engineers who support S3 in special Amazon regions.

Enjoys being a really great people manager. Having the ability to build, motivate, and mentor a group of truly innovative engineers is the most important part of this role. You should have a track record with retaining top talent, excel in day-to-day people and performance management, and have the ability to recruit new engineers.

Proven ability to take initiative. You must be comfortable with operating at a global scale and working across teams in a highly agile environment. Driving programs across boundaries inside the organization that benefit all of Amazon.

Detail orientated. You have the ability to not only take initiative but your ability to plan and track is second to none. You are able to translate customers’ requirements into an actionable roadmap. Delivering the right things at the right time with competing priorities at times.

Knows how to run a tight, lean, efficient operation. The ideal candidate will be very data focused. Utilizing metrics to measure performance gaps and increase productivity by improving the operational processes. The ability to think not only at the local level but also drive improvement on the global scale as well.

The position will help ensure overall availability and reliability to meet or exceed defined service levels of S3 Engineering.

This position requires that the candidate selected be a U.S. citizen and obtain and maintain an active TS/SCI security clearance with polygraph.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

· Demonstrated ownership of systems engineering road map and experience with managing the day-to-day activities of a team using Agile/Scrum processes
· Exceptional customer relationship skills including the ability to discover the true requirements underlying feature requests and recommend alternative technical and business approaches
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills
· Ability to handle multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
· Practiced ability to apply API design principles
· Experience with storage media technologies and cloud storage business
· Experience driving continuous quality improvement initiatives
· Meets/exceeds Amazon’s leadership principles requirements for this role
· Meets/exceeds Amazon’s functional/technical depth and complexity for this role
· Strong technical thinking and demonstrated ability to lead software design and coding in at least one modern programming language such as Java, C#, C/C++, Ruby, Python, or JavaScript

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

· Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related technical discipline, or equivalent work experience
· 5+ years of relevant engineering experience
· 5+ years of experience in understanding of all aspects of systems engineering, including design and architecture.
· 3+ years people management experience or relevant leadership experience
