DESCRIPTION

Unlike most Amazon teams, Core AI is a central organization spanning Amazon's suite of business and acts as a service to our internal partner teams for leveraging advanced science to create and drive results. Our mission is to solve AI and ML problems that have high risk with abnormally high returns.

We are looking for an entrepreneurial senior principal applied scientist with experience designing cutting edge systems that integrate both high scale engineering and machine learning to deliver disruptive innovation.

This role is to work within the Core AI team in two key ways. First, a successful candidate will work closely with Amazon's Scholar Residency Program - a program consisting of world-class academic scientists and researchers collaborating with internal partner teams to facilitate the delivery of Scholar led science into engineering systems. The second is to leverage data, engineering, and science on rapid proofs of concept while filling gaps that may arise for both the Scholars program and other Core AI initiatives.

Responsibilities
· Work with Scholars and others on the Core AI team to consult with internal partner teams on candidate opportunities to assess potential for impact derived by advanced scientific methods.
· Specifically work with partner teams on ML readiness, model design, evaluation, maintenance, and scaling on large impact opportunities.
· Work with partners to go deep on technical and scientific design and development.
· Participate and/or drive ideation, exploration, and feasibility analysis of Core AI sponsored innovations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

· PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or Statistics.
· More than 15 years of industrial/academic experience in building speech recognition and natural language processing systems (e.g. commercial speech products or government speech projects).
· Demonstrated experience to manage an industrial research team for at least 3 years.
· Solid track record of thought leadership and contributions that have advanced the field.

Desired profile



BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

· Graduate degree (MS or PhD) in electrical engineering, computer science, mathematics, machine learning, statistics, or other quantitative scientific field.
· Expertise with programming languages such as C/C++, Java, Perl or Python, R as well as scientific packages for deep learning statistics and data mining.
· Internal or external track record of delivering innovation as measured by product delivery, publication, patents, or external industry impact.
· 10+ years’ experience of in development/integration/maintenance of machine learning models into large scale systems.
· 10+ years’ experience engineering of high scale/low latency online systems.
· Ability to work in fast-paced environment and resourceful in achieving success in the face of ambiguity while prioritizing and managing multiple responsibilities.
· Strong oral and written communication skills along with a proven ability to influence others internally and externally.
