Job description

DESCRIPTION

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is seeking an Engineer with a Mechanical and/or Electrical Engineering background to become part of a global Senior AWS Field Engineering Team (SAFE), responsible for ensuring the effectiveness of the design and continuous innovation of our rapidly expanding data center fleet. As engineers at Amazon, we are responsible for achieving a world class uptime for our customers via our resilient designs and cost effective systems. As part of SAFE, you will work directly with our Field Engineers to guide the technical resolution of Root Cause Analysis investigations (RCA), lead discussions during critical events, as well as serve as the technical authority for the local Field Engineers to review and approve solutions to issues found in the field, as required.

In addition you will work closely with our Design Engineering, Construction, Operations, and Commissioning teams for the Data Centers to analyze problems with the existing fleet, and implement solutions across the global fleet.
A major part of your role will be to ensure that the technical quality, detail, and presentation of solutions or analysis to issues found are of the highest standards, and you will drive to ensure that issues found are resolved to a satisfactory conclusion, or that mitigations are sufficiently put into place across the fleet. Amazon has a global presence, therefore, domestic and international travel will be expected up to 35% of your time. Teamwork is absolutely necessary for us to accomplish our goals. You must be able to work within a team and depend on others to accomplish the required tasks. This includes working with many of the internal groups within Amazon as well as external suppliers and consultants including; utility providers, equipment manufacturers, vendors, and contractors. You will have a deep understanding of the critical equipment needs and operational challenges for large infrastructure mission critical sites and equipment within our data centers, while understanding the constructability concerns of varying designs.

The candidate will be responsible for the following:
o Serve as technical reviewers on Field Engineer Field Reports and drive a high bar of technical quality and analysis in all RCAs – while educating and training other engineers on the team in the technical side of the process.
o Guide the technical resolution of RCAs, lead discussions during Critical Site Events (be present at event when possible), as well as serve as the technical authority for local FE to review and approve solutions to issues found in the field, as required.
o Be a technical mentor to the regional Field Engineers.
o Drive a high quality of technical work, standardization on methodologies and work outputs, in partnership with stakeholders and local FE. Push the team for a higher and higher bar.
o Review all Capital Infrastructure and Innovation Projects, acting as a peer reviewer and approver of submissions on behalf of the Field Engineers.
o The role is part of a global group of Subject Matter Experts, and will be expected to standardize technical work inputs and outputs across regions. The personnel will meet frequently as a global team to ensure consistency, and discuss the major initiatives/issues in each region, ensuring proper communication and effective standardization.
o Serve as global leads for special projects that are high visibility. These projects are often urgent and require a strong degree of internal in-region Field Engineering coordination and expertise to succeed in addition to the global leads.
o Set audit standards and review audit report outputs with the Field Engineering Optimization and Audit Team (FE OAT) to drive consistent quality in the results obtained.
o Document their own scope/processes in addition to taking every opportunity to document scope for FE of any type or tenure to succeed.
o Travel of 35% is expected.
o Leverage from your direct input into the resolution of operational issues, provide direct influence over all designs for construction of new Data Centers as well as legacy Data Center upgrades as required.
o Work with commissioning teams to ensure that critical infrastructure is properly tested as well as validating installation, operation, and performance of the critical electrical/mechanical systems.
o Review and approve equipment submittals for first phase installations and for changes as they are proposed.
o Interface with internal data center design teams, server hardware teams, environmental health and safety teams to promote standards that maintain consistency and reliability in the systems and equipment installed within the site(s).
