The Portsmouth Mechanical Design Office (MDO) supports the Telecom satellites Business Unit to layout the payload including equipment and RF connectivity design for a variety of platform such as the Eurostar3000 and Eurostar Neo platforms. We are now also developing new exciting platforms for use on satellite constellations.

Our mission is to layout the payload equipment in 3D, provide stress and thermal justification, and produce the installation drawings and bill of materials to allow a quick and efficient assembly of our satellites. We also create the testing definition and detailed design to support the testing activities. We are engaged in the transformation of our company as a part of the journey to Industry 4.0, supporting the digitalization exercise, as a key contributor in the product digitalization and data continuity.

This summer internship will give the successful candidate the opportunity to be involved with one or more of the activities covered within the MDO.

Task & accountabilities :

During this internship, the activities you may undertake will include;

·  Detailing the processes of using Catia V6 in order to get the most of its capabilities and ensure that the tools linked to Catia V6 are receiving the right information to avoid issues during integration. The new way of working will need to be leaner so a great interaction with the stakeholders within and outside of the MDO will be mandatory.
·  Provide support to the Stress & Thermal team, helping develop and deploy improved tools and processes relating to their FEM/FEA activities.
·  Support to payload equipment layout, detailed routing of RF harness, detailed design of support structures and payload assembly kitting.
·  Support to Payload Test Design, BOM (Bill of Materials) creation and assembly drawings.

Our Internships are open to Undergraduates only. Therefore it is mandatory for candidates to be an undergraduate for the whole duration of the placement.

Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate the following;

·  Must be studying for a Mechanical or Aerospace engineering degree
·  An understanding of CAD tools and FEA (Finite Element Analysis) methods
·  Knowledge of the Dassault System tool (Catia V6 preferred) would be an advantage
·  Self-driven and motivated
·  Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
·  Some programming skills (VB, VB.net, php, mysql C#) would be a bonus

The nature of the role requires a candidate who is self-motivated, and unafraid to ask the questions necessary to get up to speed in the fast paced and dynamic environment of the Mechanical Design Office.
