Our client within public sector is looking for a Legal Officer/Paralegal to join their Governance and Community Services team based in Lewes, East Sussex. The role is offered on a contract basis for 3 months, working 37 hours per week, Mon to Friday paying up to £21.13/hour umbrella rate (or £16.50/hour PAYE)

The Legal Officer/Paralegal will be responsible to take on caseload independently, dealing with a variety of civil claims (up to 150 outstanding claims approx..) pursued against the Local Authority. The will be working in a team of 5 and working within a wider team of 15.

·  To support and assist fee earners in the preparation and conduct of a full range of routine and complex case work and to provide support in relation to the provision of legal advice.

·  To carry a caseload with the minimum of supervision.

·  To provide a high quality legal service to client departments

Required Experience and Skills:

·  Institute of Legal Executive qualification or a substantial part thereof or equivalent or similar qualification e.g. law degree, LPC or BVC; or Substantial proven fee-earning experience in a legal practice

·  Experience of working in the field of civil claims litigation law in a local authority ideally or private practice. Housing claims experience would be a preferred candidate although this is not essential.

·  Working knowledge of civil claims arising under the Highways Act 1980 and the Occupiers Liability Act 1957.

·  Experience of conducting own caseload within defined areas of legal practice and working to Lexcel quality standards

·  Hardworking and enthusiastic person who has an ability to interrogate information and form a decision with a legal frame work.

·  IT literate and can easily navigate new databases and systems.

·  Communicate clearly and effectively with a diverse range of people and organisations both orally and in writing

·  Ability to travel both within and outside the County as required.
