JOB DESCRIPTION:

Position Summary:

We are seeking an experienced, high caliber Principal Electrical Engineer to play a key role in Abbott’s Mechanical Circulatory Support R&D organization. This position will be located in our St. Paul, MN location.   In this position, you will be a primary technical leader in the electrical engineering team that is responsible for the product development of new products and subsystems for our market-leading Ventricular-Assist devices.  The MCS division of Abbott is known for its HeartMate suite of Ventricular-Assist systems that continue to improve the lives of tens of thousands of patients suffering from heart failure as well as their families. You will apply electrical engineering knowledge and technical leadership to product development efforts including electrical engineering design, leading/participating in design reviews, program scoping/planning, and qualification activities.  You will also provide coaching and mentoring to the broader electrical engineering team to increase the technical proficiency and capability of the group.

Responsibilities include:

  • Functions as a central electrical engineering expert within and across business units
  • Provides influence and contributes to engineering excellence in the field of Mechanical Circulatory Support
  • Creates novel design solutions that expand the business’s intellectual property
  • Understands internal & external customer needs and how to exceed their expectations
  • Ensures that program objectives are determined and met, and resources are effectively coordinated
  • Develops architecture and strategy for analog and digital circuit design for embedded and implantable systems
  • Optimizes electrical circuits through characterization, modeling, data analysis and statistics
  • Develops models and/or simulations to address complex physics design problems
  • Maintains best in class, expert knowledge in current and novel technologies for embedded and implantable systems
  • Develops team through mentorship, training, and adoption of development best practices
  • Simplifies complex topics and communicates them effectively
  • Presents to cross functional team and management
  • Develops test methods and fixtures for advanced design characterization
  • Conducts risk analysis on projects and product designs
  • Conducts root cause analysis for high priority design issues
  • Contributes to external technical committees (ISO, EN, etc.) as a representative of Abbott as needed
  • Engages teams within Abbott and across the field of active implantable devices to utilize the latest technology and expertise across the business
  • Engages with industry regulators (FDA, BSI, etc.) to explain novel designs or technical analysis in support of device submissions
  • Position may require up to 10% travel

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics or related discipline
  • 8+ years of relevant implantable electrical engineering experience in the design of EE analog and digital circuitry and PCB assemblies
  • Demonstrated expert knowledge of sound design principles and practices
  • Extensive hands-on magnetic and high voltage/ low voltage analog circuit design experience
  • Proven experience in Control Loop theory and the design and implementation of stable systems, experience with EMC requirements and test methods
  • Previous experience in circuit and magnetic modeling and simulation methods
  • Experience leading cross-functional teams and initiatives to successful outcomes
  • Working knowledge of electromagnetic physics and analysis
  • Strong verbal and written communications with ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels in the organization

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics or related discipline
  • Experience in magnetic design, including AC/DC and DC/DC converters
  • Experience in low voltage and high voltage circuit design and PCB layout techniques
  • Experience with FDA & medical device development
  • Understanding of motor control and physiological flow parameters and wireless energy transfer and rechargeable batteries
  • Experience with design and characterization of implantable electronics.
  • RF hardware and/or Bluetooth Low Energy design experience
  • Experience with EMC requirements and test methods
  • Extensive hands-on analog & digital circuit design and simulation experience for embedded systems
