Position Summary

The Plant Scheduling and Inventory Control Supervisor is responsible for supervisory and scheduling responsibilities for the plant's Material Production Scheduling and Inventory Control department. This position provides weekly scheduling for Operations; is responsible for coordinating the storage and logistics of off-site commodities; and works with Division Production Planning, Logistics, Purchasing, QA and other Abbott Divisions and third party operations to meet Division goals and objectives. The Scheduler also effectively supervises and directs all Inventory Control Coordinators and Planners.

Main Responsibilities

  • Breaks down the weekly Division schedule into a three-shift daily schedule that best meets the needs of all departments.
  • Maintains and issues manual and computerized records and status reports necessary to reflect scheduling activities.
  • Participates in and conducts shift meetings to insure schedules are understood and problems are recognized.
  • Informs managers as to changes affecting production and works with them to eliminate conflicts arising between departments.
  • Resolves problems in relation to plant inventory accuracy.
  • Maintains the schedule accuracy of the AMAPS system on a daily basis.
  • Coordinates the cycle counting program for raw materials and finished products and issues the reports indicating the results and corrective action.
  • Maintains the destruct program and issues status reports when appropriate.
  • Is the plant focal point for contact on finished product shortages.
  • Develops close working relationships with other plant and Division departments and vendors to facilitate the exchange of knowledge relative to efficient utilization of facilities, labor, and timely availability of materials.
  • Directs the planning, preparation, and issuance of the weekly/monthly, quarterly/annual three (3) shift master production schedules for all plant production lines including cans, ends, processing, filling and packaging.
  • Insures coordination meetings are conducted with various levels of management.
  • Directs the effort of plant, Division, and vendor personnel to insure timely delivery of materials needed to plant and off-site storage facilities.
  • Directs the optimization of efforts to maintain production materials to protect production efficiency and minimize dollar and space inventory investment including control of obsolete and slow moving items.
  • Directs the development and maintenance of accurate Bill of Material as to type/quantity/timeliness.
  • Insures training of subordinates and peers in the understanding and use of MRP techniques, Cambar and MITS.
  • Assures compliance to all procedures and policies concerning all areas of quality, regulatory, safety and human resources for all reporting departments.
  • Assures timely and relevant communications to and from all levels.
  • This includes assuring communications to Department Manager, between shifts and to related departments.
  • Assures financial performance goals are met (such as operating effectiveness, units per labor hour and material usage). Assists in the development of departmental budgets and standards.
  • Has input into all changes including updates, cost improvements and plans.
  • Is responsible for the financial performance of the assigned shift such that budgetary commitments are met.
  • Makes recommendations on capital investments.
  • Directly selects, trains and supervises employees, assures employees understand duties and responsibilities, and reviews and appraises employee performance against established expectations and company policies.
  • Reviews and or initiates all personnel and organizational changes for the respective shift.
  • Coaches, develops, and mentors employees in areas of responsibility.
  • Develops growth plans, interprets, implements and supports employee-related policies, procedures and programs.
  • Assigns tasks to direct staff.

Accountability

  • Responsible for assuring ingredients and production related materials are ordered and received on a timely basis to ensure plant production schedules are met.
  • Responsible for assuring the quality of delivery and for addressing vendor issues/reconciliation on behalf of the plant.
  • Assures financial performance goals are met (such as operating effectiveness, units per labor hour and material usage). Assists in the development of departmental budgets and standards.
  • Has input into all changes including updates, cost improvements and plans.
  • Is responsible for the financial performance of the assigned shift such that budgetary commitments are met.
  • Makes recommendations on capital investments.

  • Responsible for maintaining scheduling accuracy and adjusting schedules when unforeseen operation issues arise.
  • Accountable for communicating any changes in schedules or receipts of materials.
  • The incumbent acts with the direction of the Manager, Inventory Control but is expected to act independently to effectively fulfill the production scheduling responsibilities.
  • The incumbent must be a self-starter, able to take charge of the scheduling function and be able to meet specific deadlines of management and the daily changing in the production schedule caused by mechanical problems, material shortages, product mix and customer requirements.
  • The ability to work through others to accomplish the scheduling function.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Materials Management, Accounting, Business or related is preferred.
  • Prefer APICS (American Production & Inventory Control Society) certification and/or Certified Purchasing Management Association.  
  • Must possess strong verbal and written communication skills and problem solving skills. Experience with inventory planning, manufacturing, logistics or operations is preferred.
  • This position must work closely with Quality Assurance, Manufacturing, Division Purchasing and vendors to ensure high quality commodities reach the manufacturing areas on a consistent basis. Therefore, the ability to interact with all levels of plant employees and division management is required.
  • This position must be able to work with multiple and conflicting priorities in positive and effective manner.
  • The incumbent must analyze various approaches, evaluate their effectiveness, and develop appropriate production schedules.
  • The incumbent must be flexible and responsive to changing needs while reacting professionally.
