Our location in Des Plaines, IL currently has an opportunity for a Mechanical Engineer - Product Development to join our R&D Systems Development group to improve existing products and develop new products at Abbott (Molecular Diagnostics Division.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

·  Design mechanical, electro-mechanical, fluidic and consumable parts to meet design requirements and specifications
·  Use empirical and experimental analysis to aid the evaluation of designs against system requirements / specifications, perform cross-functional engineering design reviews, develop design test plans and execute testing & verification
·  Proactively identify potential issues with on-market designs, system manufacturing workflows and / or investigate field complaints pertaining to system design.
·  Work with internal departments and external vendors to obtain prototype parts, maintain ongoing relations and stay abreast of new technology and engineering developments in the industry to incorporate into Abbott products. 
·  Support invention disclosures
·  Support verification, validation, pre-clinical and system reliability testing over product life-cycles
·  Gain an understanding of clinical system workflows on Abbott products and be involved with design changes to improve workflows for Abbott customers
·  Gain an understanding of the quality and regulatory requirements at Abbott, FDA and ISO regulations
·  Independently manage time and completion of assigned tasks, while synchronizing activity with other members of the system development team
·  Support all Company initiatives as identified by management and in support of Quality Management Systems (QMS), Environmental Management Systems (EMS), and other regulatory requirements.
·  Complies with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, other regulatory requirements, Company policies, operating procedures, processes, and task assignments. Maintains positive and cooperative communications and collaboration with all levels of employees, customers, contractors, and vendors.
·  Travel (0-20%) can be expected to support engineering development at third-party vendor partners.  

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE YOU’LL BRING

Required

·  Bachelors Degree Mechanical Engineering / Electrical Engineering / Biomedical Engineering / System Engineering
·  0-3 years of experience; designing and testing mechanical, electro-mechanical, fluidic and / or consumable hardware designs.
·  Experience with mechanical 3D CAD software (Solidworks) or equivalent CAD software.
·  Experience with mechanical 2D CAD drawings and basic understanding of GD&T
·  Exposure to rapid prototyping manufacturing techniques and traditional precision machining – including, but not limited to – CNC machining, plastics and rubber injection molding, sheet metal
·  Hands-on experience with mechanical component testing, test station development, test scripting, test data analysis and reporting.
·  Familiarity with metrological tools and techniques to evaluate dimensional, material and mechanical property of hardware components  

Preferred

·  Experience with engineering design and manufacturing change control processes
·  Experience with Finite-element modeling and electro-mechanical / fluidic simulations is a plus 
·  Previous experience working in a highly matrixed and geographically diverse business environment in a medically regulated environment is a plus.
